Last Sunday For Yarn Sales July 29, 2017

We have come to the final Backyard Yarn Sale for the year. I have put some really beautiful yarns in this last time from my “too nice to use” skeins: hand tied beads, ribbon leaves, and cherries on hanks. Some hand spun angora, felting wools and others. It has been fun discovering for myself what I have in my huge stash and I was able to downsize my storage space, so thanks to everyone for that feat. Bring your bags and project lists to get all the yarn you want and need – until next year when I can hopefully replenish my courage enough to give up more of my gorgeous yarns to do this again.

Time: 9am to 3pm
When: Sunday, July 30th
Where: Del Aire, Hawthorne, CA.
Follow signs at La Cienega, El Segundo, Aviation or 120th

Only Two More Sundays For Yarn Sales July 22, 2017

Only two Sundays more and the Summer Yarn sales are over. I brought 4, 100 gallon bags of skein yarns over from storage and am sorting it now for you. Oh my goodness, so many projects I had planned for these skeins, but will never get to! Come and get them for only $2 each. Also, I will be adding some fabrics for $2/yard, mostly printed chiffons and crepe chiffons. These are great for summer sewing as they provide sun shade without weight or heat. I have spun up some more designer skeins also, while working on a new design.

Where: Del Aire, California
When: Sunday, July 23, 9am to 3pm

Follow signs from El Segundo Blvd., La Cienega, Aviation or 120th Street.

Working On New Technique July 21, 2017

I don’t know if this happens to anyone else, but here goes.  I was in that state of pre-awakening two days ago when an idea came to me.  I saw it in my half-dreaming mind clearly and in vivid, full color.  When I became more awake, it stayed with me, not like some dreams where they vanish like a mist as soon as you realize you are awake.  No, I caught it just before all the tasks of the day started piling up on my mind and I wanted to capture the idea right away.  I went out into my studio in my robe and slippers and threaded some spare yarn into the Brother Bulky.  At first I didn’t know where to start to explain it to myself, but I cast on a few stitches and knit a few rows, then I began to work out the idea.  Basically, it would be a hand-manipulated, woven embellishment on the purl side of the fabric.  After a couple of trials, I got what I am now calling the “String Of Pearls”:

SOP

I really liked the way the colors of the “pearls” were pooled using this variegated yarn. So far encouraged that my dream technique could be done, I then explored using a novelty yarn that was laying in the “too small to complete any project” bin.  I drew out a simple T-Shirt pattern for myself, did my swatch, measured the gauge, made the calculations for the top and incorporated the String Of Pearls technique on the front panel.  I completed the sewing of the pieces yesterday.  This is a quick shot of the result:

Black T SOP

This novelty yarn is a skinny metallic gold + a 2/24 Delaine in white + a skinny white and gold boucle combination that I spun up myself as one of my Designer Cakes.  It has a jumbly, tumbly look and is much nicer in person.  I think you could use any novelty yarn, so I am going to try out several and see what works best.  Oh, and realize that I have plenty of projects already going on in various stages of completion all around my studio that I just HAVE to finish – it seems like a tornado just hit in there.  But I never have a choice as to when these ideas come which must be worked out and jotted down on paper so I don’t forget them.  I am working on a gorgeous coat right now that I really, really need to finish because when I have a few more done, they will be my new items for my Fall and Winter craft shows.  Arggg…there is just so much time in the day and only so much energy I have to do all this work.

This will eventually become a pattern on Etsy when I finish all my experimentation of yarns, sizes and variations.  I think it would be a great one to demonstrate at a machine knitting seminar too.  I wish there were more seminars on the West Coast, I would love to travel and share all my ideas.  It seems like most of the seminars are in the MidWest and on the East Coast.  They usually don’t have the money to fly me and my patterns out to demonstrate, but it is still my biggest wish to be invited to these seminars and enjoy the ambiance of being with other machine knitters who love this art form.

Why is Mother Nature mad at us, putting on the HEAT for our summer weekends? I have the tent and cooling areas so husbands can look at their emails in the shade.  So come out to my sale on all types of yarn on Sunday, 16 July. I made a crate full of new shades of Designer Yarn Cakes for you with lots of yardage in each – these are made with several strands of skinny yarns to make up into worsted weight (see photo below). I am going to be open only from 9am to 12 as I have an event to go to in the afternoon.   Follow the signs to the corner of 122nd and Isis. As always, I have yarn for $3/lb, Designer Yarn Cakes for $5 each and special skein yarns (novelty boa, chenille, eyelash, sparkly) for $2/skein.  Fabric is still only $2/yd.

I took some of my Designer Cakes and a cone of yarn that everyone had overlooked for a couple of months and started on a coat design (see photo).  I got to it first, so there you go. I wish I could knit 24/7, but there is a thing called grocery shopping and eating that I need to do occasionally.

When: Sunday, July 16
Where: Del Aire, corner of Isis and 122nd

This one is done now.  So many options with it had me dreaming of knitting and waking up with easier ways to do this and that.  Now it is done and I am so happy!!  I made a couple for myself that I will be bringing to “Show and Tell” at the El Segundo Slipt Stitchers meeting and to my Machine Knitting Guild, the Cone Connection in Anaheim.

Ah, now to sit back and enjoy working on more knitting ideas…..

I am getting these down on paper and working out all the details.  This is done on a Bulky machine because I am using worsted weight (#4) yarns.   Here is the Mermaid Tail Shawl done with JoAnn’s Buttercream Rainbow Boucle (1 Skein)

Mermaid Tale Shawl

For the cardigan, I have 4 sizes: Baby, Child, Adult Sm-Med and Adult Lg-XLg.  Also 2 versions: Long Sleeves or Ruffled Sleeves. I have played around enough on them , so I will go into the Post-Production phase and publish the pattern.  It should be available on Etsy in a week.

I am using readily available light worsted weight yarns from Red Heart,  Loops and Threads and Lion Brand which you can get at Michael’s or JoAnn’s or online.  The variegated yarns have an interesting effect.
